L'Ultima Cena of Castello Pallavicino inspired Leonardo
The Pallavicino Castle of Monticelli d'Ongina, also known as Rocca Pallavicino-Casali is one of the most impressive of the Castelli del Po circuit. The first mention of the manor dates to 1298 but it was during the '400 that its defensive character was strengthened at the behest of Rolando Pallavicino. The Chapel is one of the most interesting environments. Its realization is due to Carlo, son of Rolando and bishop of Lodi, who commissioned the decoration to Benedetto and Bonifacio Bembo. The visitor can admire scenes from the christian tradition including the Ultima Cena. In relation to it is said that Leonardo drew inspiration from it to create the most famous one of the Refectory of Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan. In fact, there are a lot of similarities between the two frescoes. The Ethnographic Museum of the Po, the Peasant Museum and the Aquarium located in the basement of the castle will make you know closely the territories lapped by the Great River.
