Delizia del Verginese
The story of the Delizia which, from an agricultural farmhouse, became a monumental Este residence
The Delizia del Verginese is one of the monumental residences that the Este family had built in Portomaggiore. In the beginning it was an agricultural farmhouse easily accessible by water from Ferrara. Subsequently, under the duchy of Alfonso I D'Este, it became one of the most interesting residences on the Po. The duke had embellishment and expansion works carried out to give the Delizia to the cultured courtesan Laura Dianti. The lady accompanied the duke for many years to come after the death of his wife Lucrezia Borgia. Laura's features can still be admired today in a portrait of the woman that the duke commissioned to Titian. La Delizia del Verginese is a villa on two floors bordered at the top by four crenelated towers. Through a portico you reach the chapel, the rear brolo and the dovecote tower.
