Rocca dei Rossi di San Secondo
Fairy tales, aphorisms and allegories to represent the profound contrast between the Rossi and the Farnese Families
The Rocca dei Rossi of San Secondo was designed as a medieval fortress in 1413 and then transformed into a sumptuous Renaissance residence. Witness of this metamorphosis is certainly the decorative apparatus that covers an area of 3000 square meters. The frescoes are like an open book on the historical-political events of the dinasty. The frescoed gallery is located on the main floor and is associated with five different commissions. The visitor will have the opportunity to admire scenes of triumphs and defeats interpreted by characters of the mythological tradition. A curiosity concerns the use of fairy tales, aphorisms and allegories to represent the profound contrast between the Rossi family, holder of local power, and that of the new dukes of Parma, the Farnese. The magic unfolds through frescoed scenes in a journey between myth and historical reality. The Sala delle Gesta Rossiane is certainly the most prestigious. On the ceiling and along the walls are represented the 13 exploits accomplished by the Reds in a chronological span of three centuries. The Scalone D’Onore, the Loggetta d'Onore and the Atrio contribute to making the complex even more fascinating. Finally, on the ground floor the rooms of the stables and gunboats have been recovered to create a medieval archaeological themed itinerary. The Rocca dei Rossi of San Secondo never ceases to amaze. Even today, around it there are events such as the Palio delle Contrade and the historical re-enactment "Arte e suggestioni in Rocca".
