Villa della Mensa
The large country villa where the bishops of the Este dynasty loved to stay
The historic monumental complex of Villa della Mensa is located on the left bank of the Po di Volano. Today it is owned by the municipality of Copparo and the province of Ferrara. Although the residence never belonged to the Este family, it was still linked to the family because of the illustrious presences who stayed here. Its construction dates to medieval times but important extensions were made between 1474 and 1495 at the behest of the then bishop of Ferrara. The site became, thus, a large country villa where the bishops of the Este dynasty used to stay. As for the origin of the name, it seems to derive from the fact that for a certain period it belonged to the Archiepiscopal Mensa of Ferrara.
